About Me
Thanks for dropping by. My name is Mark Hackett and I live in my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. My wife and I are raising two kids and two cats. I work in the nonprofit sector for a living and enjoy a good conversation over craft beer, exercise, and reading.
I’m one of the many devout Christians who was pushed out of American evangelicalism for trying to follow Jesus. I’m still processing some things, but I’ve mostly turned my attention to the future.
This is where I write long-form articles and host conversations about the Christian faith and church culture in the American South. I’m an institutionalist who believes the means are just as important as the ends. Quick answers that give the illusion of certainty don’t make real problems go away. This is not the place for concrete answers. Everything here is an expression of my faith and love for the Church as I try to figure some things out. I hope it helps you, too.
Here are the best ways to keep up with everything I’m doing here, and more:

Sometimes people ask me about the church steeple photo on the homepage. It’s one I took several years ago of St. Philip's Church in Charleston, South Carolina. The congregation was established in 1681, making it the oldest church in the city and one of the oldest in the United States. Many prominent people are buried there, including colonial governors, bishops, and a Vice President. A fitting photo to be sure.
